End of Life Care Certificate Program

The Smith College School for Social Work takes great pride in co-sponsoring this intensive post- Masters certificate program with Baystate Health System which will take place on the Smith Campus in Northampton, Mass. The program consists of two long weekends (Oct. 4-7, 2007 and May 8-11, 2008) of intensive coursework punctuated by a six month clinically supervised internship in the participant's work setting. Supervisors are outstanding clinicians chosen by the program. Academic content includes: psychodynamic and developmental theories, advanced practice I and II, ethics, spirituality I and II, legal and ethical issues, pain and symptom management, hospice and palliative care, work with marginalized populations, work with lesbian and gay persons who are dying, advanced leadership and systems change. The clinical internship requires that the student carry two to three study cases in her/his work setting, run a group, develop or participate in interdisciplinary or peer supervision and receive two hours of clinical supervision monthly. The program is designed for end of life social workers with a minimum 2 years of post graduate experience who are currently working with end of life care issues. The End of Life Care Certificate Program carries 63 continuing education credits. One hundred and thirty graduates have gone on to take leadership in the field: as educators, program developers, writing grants, entering doctoral programs, publishing and training others. For detailed information about this program and/or for an application, please contact Kim.buckelew@bhs.org or call 413-794-3466 or click here to go to the Smith website. http://www.smith.edu/ssw/geaa/academics_cecertificate.php

Palliative Care Leadership Center Initiative Launches

The Center to Advance Palliative Care is pleased to announce the Palliative Care Leadership Centers, an initiative funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to support the increasing number of palliative care programs in hospitals nationwide. Palliative care is treatment that focuses on relieving suffering and improving the quality of life of seriously ill patients and their families. Palliative care is a growing healthcare trend in the U.S. with 1 in 5 hospitals reporting programs. US News & World Report now credits hospitals with palliative care programs in its ranking of Americas Best Hospitals.

The Palliative Care Leadership Centers are six premier palliative care programs representing diverse care delivery settings, including academic medical centers, cancer centers, health systems, and community-based organizations.  The Centers are funded to provide free site visits, training, and technical assistance to hospitals seeking to develop and strengthen their own palliative care programs.  Site visits begin in February 2004.

Palliative Care Leadership Center visitors will meet with clinicians, administrators, and institutional leaders in a series of sessions that make up a comprehensive curriculum. The curriculum includes materials and tools focusing on: assessing hospital needs, financing and business planning, designing and staffing, measuring clinical and financial impact, marketing palliative care to clinicians and patients, ensuring and managing growth, and strengthening community collaborations with hospice and other healthcare settings.  Following the site visit, the Centers will provide on-going mentoring to continue support for the palliative care teams efforts.

To learn more and to register for a site visit go to http://www.capc.org and click on the Palliative Care Leadership Center link at the top of the page. Or, e-mail pclc@mssm.edu

Reports and Articles:

National Cancer Policy Board and the Institute of Medicine Release Report: This report describes Death in America: What We Need to Know.  A review of the availability of current sources of information shed light on the quality of care and quality of life at the end-of-life.  It uncovers wide gaps between what we would like to know and what is actually known or knowable, if existing national-level data were fully explored and analyzed.  The report surveys currently available datasets and methodological issues in the collection and use of data about dying and makes a series of recommendations which address supporting the use of existing data systems, and undertaking new data collection efforts.
